John Constable

  • Was born at East Bergholt about ten miles down-river from Lamarsh and is famous for his landscape masterpieces of the nearby Dedham Vale
  • His grandfather owned the mill at Bures the next village south of Lamarsh
  • His early painting Lamarsh House, actually Daws Hall before it was re-fronted, is owned by the National Trust and hangs in Anglesey Abbey near Cambridge

Thomas Gainsborough

  • Was born in Sudbury  about 3 miles North of Lamarsh and in his youth spent much of his time drawing and sketching in the Stour valley
  • He is famous for his splendid portraits of the rich and famous as well as his landscapes
  • His painting of “The Lamarsh Cliff” (also called Landscape with the village Cornard), now part of wooded nature reserve at Daws Hall, is owned by the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh
  • The house in Sudbury where he was born is now a museum dedicated to his memory which has recently received a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund
